Notes for attending the tasting

Posted on May 6, 2022 by lufuture

A tasting is an occasion for wine lovers to taste and exchange wine tips, but by its very nature, it is also a social occasion. So what do you need to be aware of when attending a tasting?

1. Speak freely, but avoid arbitrary bias

Drinking wine is a very subjective thing, and everyone’s senses are different, so they will naturally experience the same wine differently. If you like a wine, you can share the qualities you like about it with your peers or the tasting organizer. If you don’t like a wine, put it down, pass it to a friend, or spit it out naturally, and try another style of wine.

Everyone has different preferences, and it’s not unusual for some people to like a powerful style of Cabernet Sauvignon and others to like an elegant and delicate Pinot Noir. Especially if you don’t like the wine, you can reserve your opinion and not arbitrarily criticize a preference that differs from yours.

2. Watch what you say and do

In a public setting like a tasting, it is important to be mindful of appropriate facial expressions and body language, and to avoid indecent behavior such as overly exaggerated expressions and tongue sticking out.

3. Enjoy every sip

“Practice makes perfect”, cherish the real-world learning opportunities of tastings and enjoy every sip of wine. Tastings don’t happen every day, and there are even fewer opportunities for high-caliber tastings. Some small tastings may invite winery representatives to come and share, which is a chance to get up close and personal with the winery’s philosophy, and it’s a good idea to get some information about the tasting’s theme, winery history, and winemaking techniques ahead of time.

4. Spit the wine out properly

Tastings typically offer a variety of wines, and for those who are not up to the task, spitting will help keep you awake to continue tasting the wines that follow.

5. Go in a group

The advantage of going to a tasting in a group is that, in addition to exchanging tasting tips, you can also look out for each other. It’s a lot safer to have a friend to look after you when you’re not paying attention at a tasting and you might drink too much.

In addition to the above, it’s a good idea to find out in advance if there is a dress code for the tasting, and to avoid ruining the tasting environment, it’s a good idea not to wear perfume or eat heavy food before you go out.
