Classification of watches

Posted on May 4, 2022 by lufuture

Watches are divided into the following main categories:

Mechanical watches

Timing instruments with mechanical vibration systems, such as pendulum clocks, balance clocks, etc. It works by using a vibrating system with a constant period and continuous vibration. Multiplying the period of vibration by the number of vibrations equals the time elapsed, and time = watch vibration period x number of vibrations. It generally consists of several parts such as the energy source, the wheel system, the escapement, the vibration system, the hand mechanism and the additional mechanism. The clockwork or hammer provides the energy for the mechanical clock to work, and the gear system increases the speed so that the clock can run continuously for many days at a time.

Electronic watches

The basic part is made up of electronic components. The working principle of the electronic clock is based on the physical phenomenon of “electricity generates magnetism, magnetism generates electricity”. It is designed to convert electrical energy into magnetic energy, and then from magnetic energy into mechanical energy to drive the hour and minute hands to achieve the purpose of timekeeping.

Transistorized balance wheel watches

This is a dry cell battery as the energy source, a transistor as the switch, and a balance spring as the oscillation system.

Quartz watches

It uses a “quartz crystal” as the oscillator and an electronic frequency divider to control the motor and drive the hands with high precision. The electronic line hand watch. This is a watch that combines an electronic movement with a quartz movement, with both an electronic display and a hand travel indication. This type of movement such as Citizen Miyota Co., Ltd’s T250 movement.

Lightwave watches

The Lightwave watch automatically corrects the time and date of the watch by receiving “standard time” waves from the transmitter tower through the watch’s built-in radio wave receiver and antenna, which obtains data such as the hour and calendar. The standard time signal is based on the theory of high-precision cesium atomic watches, with an error of one second in 100,000 years. All of Citizen’s electric wave watches are powered by photokinetic technology, which uses any visible light source as an energy source. As long as there is light, there is energy, and as long as the waves can be received there will never be an error.

Electronic paper watches

Electronic paper watches are watches with an internal electronic paper display that can show the time, day, and date. The main ways to realize e-paper technology include cholesteric liquid crystal display technology, electrophoretic display technology (EPD), and electric wetting display technology. The electronic watch paper applied to the electronic paper watch mainly uses electrophoretic display technology. The display brightness and contrast of e-paper watches are high, and there is no need to use backlight method at all to improve readability. The electronic paper display used in e-paper watches has a simple hardware structure and a thickness of up to about 1mm. It is a new force in the army of watches.

Diving watches

A dive watch, as the name implies, is a watch that is water resistant and intended for diving. A normal waterproof watch is not for diving. A dive watch must meet strict regulations, not just waterproof enough to be called a dive watch. The standard water resistance of a dive watch is at least 100 meters; the bezel has an outer ring that can be rotated in one direction to measure dive time; divers are often in gray water, so the hands, scale or surface of a dive watch must usually be coated with luminescent material to make reading time easier for the user. The common brands of dive watches are: Rolex, Finland’s Suunto Element Series Aquamarine dive watch, Omega Seamaster Ploprof Series dive watch, TAG Heuer Aquamarine Series, Universal Watch Aquatimer Series, Blansacar Super Submarine Series, and so on.
