There are three main types of wine produced in Alsace, France, namely Alsace AOC, Alsace Grand Cru AOC and Alsace sparkling wine (Cremant d’Alsace).
The Alsace AOC was officially established in 1962 and produces more than 70% of the wines of Alsace and 90% of the white wines of the appellation. Most of these wines are made from a single variety and can be labeled with the variety name, while wines made from a blend of several varieties may be labeled with “Edelzwicker”.The Alsace Grand Cru wines are produced from 51 Grand Crus classified according to geological and climatic criteria. These unique terroirs were officially granted AOC status in 2011 and account for only 5% of the total production of Alsace wines. These Grand Crus, with the exception of the Grand Cru Zotzenberg, are allowed to grow Cervannes, but only the four noble varieties are allowed to be grown in the Grand Crus.
The Alsace sparkling wines, which were officially granted AOC status in 1976, are made by the Traditional Method, with a secondary fermentation in the bottle and at least nine months of ageing in the mud, and are produced in a variety of styles. In addition, Alsace also produces a spirit called Marc d’Alsace, which is made from the pomace left over from the pressing of Gewürztraminer grapes in the appellation and is clear and aromatic.Warm reminder: Stay tuned to the LuFuture.com app for the latest market updates.
